The US company Corning, Inc., based in Corning, New York, produces glass, ceramics and related materials for industrial and scientific applications. One of Corning's best-known products is Gorilla Glass, which was launched in 2007 in the first iPhone. It is an aluminosilicate glass with a thickness of 0.7–2 mm.
Since then, more than 30 manufacturers have used Gorilla Glass for smartphones, tablet PCs and netbooks in over 575 models. At the beginning of the year, Corning Inc. announced the new Gorilla Glass ANTIMICROBIAL CORNING® GORILLA® GLASS at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES).
Surface with silver ions
The ANTIMICROBIAL CORNING® GORILLA® GLASS is also characterized by improved breakage and high scratch resistance, in addition, the surface is equipped with an antimicrobial formula. According to Corning, the addition of silver ions prevents the proliferation of bacteria, fungi, mold and the like on the touchscreen surface. As long as the device is functional.
This is also the advantage of this surface glass compared to antibacterial wipes, sprays and other cleaning agents that exist today and are unfortunately only temporary. The antibacterial effect of silver is already known from medical devices.
Use is classified as safe
For the user, the glass is classified as safe and non-toxic if it is used for its intended purpose. For this purpose, it was specially registered with the EPA (= U.S. Environmental Protection Agency).
