The customer requested a 4 wire 3.8" resistive handheld touch screen that should be very rugged. After a 1.5 meters drop on all edges of the handheld the resistive touch screen is not allowed to break.
Outdoor and indoor usage of the handheld with finger and stylus.
Thinckness: < 3.0 mm
Number of touches: 2 Million with 0.8 mm stylus radius and 250 gr. pressure
Number of scribes: 1 Million with 0.8 mm stylus radius and 250 gr. pressure
The handheld device was quite heavy and the forces in the drop situation are very high. Even a chemically strengthened glass of 3 mm did not pass the drop test. We had to develop a method to make the glass even stronger.
We cannot disclose here how we did this but your can talk to one of our engineers to discuss our solution. The only thing I can tell you we used glass of a 2.0 mm thickness and a special procedure. ![]()
4 wire resistive touch screen and stylus usage are a real nogo. The 2 major problems we had to solve was the surface durability and the damage of the ITO coating on the polyester. This one was easy for us because our patented ULTRA technology could fulfill this requirement without any problem
The problem that we had to solve was caused by water migrating through the top polyester layer. This was not a immediate problem but over time it really caused trouble. Especially if the device was left inside the car over night. That problem was also solved by our ULTRA technology. The micro glass on top of the polyester layer completely prevented the water to migrate and therefor damage the touch screen.
